Discover what polychords are and learn how polychords differ from extended chords. We consider how extended chords are given a functional context whereas polychords add colour to music without needing a functional context. The use of polychords will extend the harmonic vocabulary for composers.

The advice on parallels primarily applies to four part harmony. Also polychords are often not functional in progression.

In high school band our director shared the order of sharps: F C G D A E B. To find the key shown on the staff by the number of sharps, count two more sharps ahead; i.e. three sharps? Count F C G (shown on the staff) and go to more: D A. The key shown is A major. For flats the order is reversed: B E A D G C F . To find the key shown count back one flat: i.e. three flats? B E A (shown on the staff) and go back one to E. The key shown is Eb major. Gareth, our teacher here, does a fine job presenting "key" information. I haven't seen man of his other videos but this one is very basic. Other videos will have to show relationships of keys, modulation, etc. Thanks, Gareth!

I never say A minor 7 b5 it is a bit long winded and it’s not an A minor chord if it has a flat 5 in the chord, it is a diminished chord with a minor seventh not a diminished 7th so I can actually understand the logic of calling it half diminished so really if you want to get into it, the more correct name would be half diminished. Of course you can call it a borrowed chord if that’s how it functions. Which of course you gave an example of that but that’s a very specific setting to call it a borrowed chord. You can have a chord VII with a minor 7th and that’s a half diminished chord and it’s not a borrowed chord so, I think in many ways it’s just function. It’s a half diminished chord that can be seen as a borrowed chord if you see the logic of what I am getting at. Also some would call it a C minor 6 when you put it into first inversion. Again depends on function but most of the time even calling that would be technically incorrect for me. Am I being picky?
