Conjunct and Disjunct Melody Writing - Music Composition
What is meant by the terms conjunct and disjunct in relation to melody writing? We listen to and look at one melody written entirely using conjunct movement and consider its merits & weaknesses. We then do the same in relation to a melody written entirely using disjunct movement. Finally we consider a melody written combining conjunct and disjunct movement and evaluate the best way of doing so. This music composition lesson will enhance your ability to evaluate the construction of a melody in terms of conjunct and disjunct movement and will help you to compose successful melodies.

Never really understood modulation. This was very useful. Thanks
I never say A minor 7 b5 it is a bit long winded and it’s not an A minor chord if it has a flat 5 in the chord, it is a diminished chord with a minor seventh not a diminished 7th so I can actually understand the logic of calling it half diminished so really if you want to get into it, the more correct name would be half diminished. Of course you can call it a borrowed chord if that’s how it functions. Which of course you gave an example of that but that’s a very specific setting to call it a borrowed chord. You can have a chord VII with a minor 7th and that’s a half diminished chord and it’s not a borrowed chord so, I think in many ways it’s just function. It’s a half diminished chord that can be seen as a borrowed chord if you see the logic of what I am getting at. Also some would call it a C minor 6 when you put it into first inversion. Again depends on function but most of the time even calling that would be technically incorrect for me. Am I being picky?
Function is everything
What about I - IV - I. ?
Perfectly possible
Great video as always, much more helpful than studying dusty harmony books :)

Our American Star Spangled Banner is quite the disjunct melody that comes to my mind. That is a ridiculously hard one to sing. Great lesson with my coffee. Thanks again.
😀
What came to mind for me was two well known themes by Beethoven. The Ode to Joy from his ninth symphony is almost, but not entirely, conjunct, and the main them from the last movement of his sixth symphony is almost, but not entirely, disjunct. (Even better, the main theme from the second movement of his seventh symphony is largely on one note.)
Good examples
I was always confused on why two measures of 2/2 time wasn't the same as one measure of 4/4 time, but I guess it has to do with the Emphasis on which beat.
Absolutely
I had my piano lesson today and my teacher asked where i had learned something that had impressed him. And I proudly gave a shoutout to Gareth at Music Matters.

Outstanding! Or as they say 'over there ': brilliant! I'm gonna call you Chord I. Seems like always coming back to your channel to learn (really resolve confusion) on this concept and others. Your video leaves nothing to chance in fact you fully delivered onthe title of your vdo: ''tritones' and then 'substitutions.' Taking it step by step. Well done. Perhaps, best compliment I can offer is: after watching your vdo, I now understand how to construct a tritone substitution chord easily.
Thank you. Glad it’s helpful. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk

13:10 I believe 6/32 time (even though it wouldn’t fit the rhythm you wrote down) is a valid time signature. It would mean 2 dotted semiquavers per bar.
It’s perfectly possible theoretically. Whether anyone uses it is another matter
Something interesting that makes Bach's embellishment much more effective is the fact that he uses imitation from the first two motifs (first bass compass) in the tenor's line, same idea in the harmonical and rhythmical parallel at the soprano's semiquaver beats in the end of the phrases, with the change from first inversion to tonic and the dissonance. It is about moviment for sure, but not only, it is about the architectural design of the whole structure, it is art. Thank you for the analysis! I love 'Inside the Mind of Bach' series.
Absolutely
What if in an ensemble, only one part (say drums) does a hemiola while the others keep in their time. Would this still be called a hemiola or something seperate? Thanks youZ!
Absolutely. Hemiola in the drum part

@@MusicMattersGBhi, I have a random question if you don't mind me asking. Does C major and A minor have the same supertonic? I know it's D in C major. Is it B in A minor or still D since all the notes are the same in relative keys?

What’s the reason of diving compound time into three? I’m guessing that’s the way composers thought of making it easier to count at higher speeds but also the feeling. The stresses as well. That’s just how it breaks down if that makes sense. That’s my guess but if there is a stronger reason I am missing please let me know.
That’s about it.
Here’s what confuses me about the minor diatonic chords… Some people make the seventh cord BDF but others make it BbDF… I understand the B comes from the harmonic minor scale and the Bb comes from the natural minor scale but which one gets used more?? Or do I need to know them both equally well?
BDF is what you have in the harmonic minor of C and that’s generally the default position. BbDF occurs in the natural minor or the descending melodic minor.
Great tutorial on this topic. Thank you so much for sharing.

If this were to be a instrumental melody, wouldn’t it be best to have a slur on the c natural to b in bar 6 and similar again in bar 8. It’s technically a suspension but you would still treat the crotchets as a bit of a leaving note.
Good thought.
